What a wild weekend, black fri is over and I'm still here! Work was a mad house. People fighting over sheets and towels of all things. Now to get through christmas. I have told myself every year to start early. I don't listen......I did start, just  a few days ago. Ugg, I hate it.
I'm not sure when I will put the tree up.I think I'm going red and gold. Would like to do snowflakes but haven't made them so guess not.lol I'm so slow on stuff like that.
The rain has set in here might change to snow. yuck !!! I could do without that, but love Indiana, because you never know what each day will bring. Hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving, now on with Christmas.

warm day and garlic

It is so nice outside, I went out at daylight and planted garlic. It is nice and warm in the ground under a nice cover of straw and I hope it will give me some much needed garlic. I'm really excited... The chickens are getting all the new feathers for winter and I'm still getting eggs, have some in the freezer and am ready for winter with them now. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Potato chips

Just made my first batch, was very good, but they didn't last long. lol I hope to be adding pictures soon, my phone just won't do......sorry.  Took the peelings out to the chickens, just love them birds.....

Fresh air and cool winds

This morning I gave hubby a ride back from the woods on the 4 wheeler. It was so good to feel the cool air, I don't get out as much as I would like, but I do get out as much as i can. I'll go back up and get him for lunch, I'm making potato soup to warm his belly.
This cool air has also got the chickens up and about. They seem to gather like other animals for winter, I've noticed they are out pecking like crazy. I'll be adding deep cover to the coop to help keep them warm. Helps I think... I have also been storing eggs for this winter so that I will have them to cook with. I will miss seeing them so much this winter I like it when they are running around everywhere.
Hope everyone has a great day....and week

Pretty Sunday

Spent some time outside, taking off dead heads from more of my flowers so I can have them again next year. Went out and checked the strawberries, they are now ready for there long nap along with the rest of my herbs and flowers.
The chickens are enjoying this warm sunny day too. They are running around all over the yard and into the woods. I love raising free-range chickens. Next spring I hope to have another 2 dozen, looking into cold range chickens so i have more eggs in the winter. A new coop is in store too........might redesign the old corn crib. or part of the ole pole barn. just not sure, but I have the whole winter to figure it out. lol
I hope all you ladies have a great week..

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Boy time is flying by, Nov and it's still nice outside, I live in Indiana it should be colder....but I will take it. I got the dirt turned over in the raised beds over the weekend and now to fertilize with what my chickens do best, lol.

I done most my weekly baking over the weekend so I've only got to do a few loafs of bread to get me through this week. I'll be fixing my kitchen pantry for winter, I don't know about you but I cook different in the winter and need different things close by. I make more stews, roasts, lots more baking.

Well short post but off to work I go everyone have a great day.

Critters are up

Well still have a fine rain falling, went out to gather the night eggs and close up the chickens. They were already in, guess they didn't like the cooler weather. They had cleaned up all the persimmons that had fell today. They will have some pretty deep orange in the yolks for the next few days. lol won't taste them though. The cows have been counted and the fire stoked so in the house for the rest of the night. sure hope everyone had a wonderful day.

This is my young rooster, Joe, He is a brown leghorn, guards the chicks like a pro.....I love his blue feathers

Fall gatherings and the crazy lady

This time of year beware, as I drive the country roads looking for the dead heads.......yes I'm the one, muck boots, baseball cap and shovel with plastic baggies in my hand. That's me plucking off the dead heads of flowers that have passed there season, for winters rest. It's me the one digging up plants that I tagged thur out the year, oh my..........the truth is out ,,I'm a bag toting lady who can't be trusted around your plants.....there it's out !!! now I can move on with my day. lol Have a great day everyone !!!

Rainy day Tuesday

I'll be doing indoor chores today, laundry and slow cooking. Went out and let the chickens out of the pen and added wood to the wood stove. I love that wood stove, it keeps the house warm and cuts down on the elc. bill by 150 dollars. I'm moving my sewing machine into the living room for the winter, because I sew more in the winter.
I've been visiting a few blogs, seeing what other farmers are doing. I  love to see the porches and the fall deco. I'll be working on mine later today if I get off here and get busy. lol so everyone have a blessed day....

A week of cleaning

I'm on vacation this week and am cleaning from top to bottom. The kitchen pantry is my first stop, then the cabinets.
I try to keep my home clean, but boy do I have a mess in the cabinets. I thank God for all he has provided for us. This is why I need a cleaning plan, I can surface clean just fine but with  working full time, and the farm sometimes I just can't keep up with the rest. I could blame it on my age, but then I'm only 53 I should be able to keep up...I've been looking at fly ladies page, to get ideas.
I sure hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Wonderful day on the farm

It is such a wonderful day. So pretty outside, getting ready to go for a cycle ride, then back to get the raised beds finished for winter. I love fall, picking up walnuts, and hickory nuts for the new years baking, the changing leaves, but most of all the warmth of the wood stove and cuddling, hee hee that winter brings when hubby can't be outside as much.....lol. I'm going to study beekeeping as much as I can i want a hive come spring if i am ready. The new chicks will arrive this spring also, 50 little ones... slowly getting the farm to where it will be able to feed us...12 egg layers , pecan, walnut, and hickory nut trees, blackberries, cattle, garden, persimmon and cherry trees, strawberries and soon apples. I want so bad to be able to feed the family off the farm..............it's coming soon !!! Have a wonderful day !!!

season changes

As the leaves change, and thoughts turn to winter coming and what I can do to make my home warm and inviting to the most important people in my life. My family...................I want my husband to enjoy being home, our daughter to love having her friends over and at the end of my work day, feel good about what i have done. It is time to bring out the soft blanket to lay on the couch and the pillows to cuddle up with to watch TV. In the summer we are outside most the time but come winter, family movies. The candles ready and lantern lights ready for snow power outages. The freezer ready for late winter pies and stews. I so love fall and winter.

Ending of the garden

The garden has dwindled down to just tomato plants, sprawled every which way like hands reaching to hold onto life. Their red ripe fruit ready to be picked just one more time. This weekend I will put them to rest. Then the hotbed will be put to sleep for the season. I wasn't as productive as I would of liked and pray next year that I will have a better bounty. I praise God for what he gave me............
Our youngest has started drivers ed, I have started coloring my hair every 4 weeks instead of 6, due to the fact. lol Really she does very good, but I will say it was a little easier to take getting in a ditch with the others when they started, remember Kaydy is 15 years behind my last, so things hurt a little more.
Winter is just around the corner and I'm looking for a good cookbook with lots of great things to make this winter, I want to start from page one to the last page. One thing out of each regular section to make our meals. I think it would be fun and exciting. Has anyone ever done this? Fresh bread, pasta Oh My !!
Well I hope everything is well with everyone, take care and God Bless.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Wow, it's about time and felt so good. The grass was turning brown not to mention the garden what little I got planted. I'm going to see what late plants I can grow and put them in the hotbed to see it I can stretch my dollar a little more this fall. I hope everyone has had a good week so and a great day today.

Big Smile

I was off work today, took kaydy to get her hair trimmed for school then to the movies with her and friends. Had a wonderful time. Best part of the day was when i pulled up in the drive and found two hugh sacks of  corn..........................Mr Sneed, Lord love his soul had picked us some to go in my freezer. That man has been such a blessing to us over the years, he is in his late 80s and still puts out a garden that would put a yound man to shame,he can't eat any of it just puts it out for others. Love that man.
I went to get some of my posts and my blog had been closed to me, so, I guess I will start fresh, which is fine. My chickens are back to layin some got 9 yesterday 6 today out of our15 it has been to hot I think for them to lay.
I've been trying to think of something I could do to help get some things paid off this year, I'm doing mending and such. Selling a few eggs...lol and a few other things. Would really like to be a sahm, but if it's not in the plan for us, from God then I  guess i better smile and thank him for the job I have.
Well guess I'll close for now, hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Budget, tight purse strings

My budget has just about been pulled as much as it can. God has and will always provide but I need to be a good servant with what He has in trusted me to use. So I have went over my budget, even though I, can, freeze, dehydrate, cook from scratch, sew/mend and coupon I am still needing to do more. My love gifts cannot change, that is to God, so I need to control other spending.
With gas prices as they are, that will be one thing I will change only shop when in town, do not make special trips to get 1 thing, do it all. My food bill for 3 is around $170-200.00 a month I will clip more coupons, and buy only on true sells, not set up ones.
I also will put out more garden this year, more farmers markets and no processed canned goods, Only in season items will be bought, if I have not grown them.
My family counts on me to cloth, feed and entertain them,  I buy fabrics that are strongly made and take care of them, mend and repair then color when needed. I have shirts and pants that I have worn weekly for over 8 yrs.
Foods come from my pantry and entertainment from ourselves, with games, walks or home chosen movies, tv is limited. I'm going to see what other ladies are doing in their homes and also posting more detail on my own. Sorry so long everyone have a wonderful day.

My Pantry has changes coming !!

For years I have canned the food in my pantry, looked at the jars all lined up thinking "I did good".  I still believe canning will be a big part of my life but I'm changing. My heavy shelf of canned goods will change to 5 gal, buckets full of dehydrated, packaged foods. I will be canning less and using more of my dehydrator. I'm learning how to prepare those foods and the fact that they can last longer gives them a jump on my list. I know that I also need to have more water stored for these things but I think in the long run this would be a better choice for me.  So now my journey will begin..I'm so glad something new!!!  Life always changing !!! if not only by food.

Thats our flood behide us, we have been flooded in now for11 days. It doesn't look like it will go down for another week or so.We can not drive out at all the only way out is to walk across the hill and go over 2 small streams to a gravel road behind us. Our house is safe for now as long as Monroe doesn;t lose their dam. This has given me time to think about my pantry and stock, I have always been a prepper and I know now there are somethings I didn;t figure in right, one was tp, I need to stock up more I had figured what we use now but when everyone is home 24-7 that makes a huge impact. When I got to thinking about it everything was, sugar flour tea everything I had based on what we use daily but in an emergence every is home. So now to restock with that in mind.. Everyone have a wonderful day.

gleaning for spring

I know some of you have already done this but I am just simply slow this year. I'm taking one room at a time and as they say making it mine. Cleaning windows, curtains and such. Putting away or donating things I've out grown . Making my house our home. I have so my plans this year that I'm almost afraid to list them in fear that I won't get the done and the shame is more then I could handle, lol
I met a lady a few weeks back that is teaching me how to make soap, beeswax candles and to put up my own teas. I think that one excites me more than any other. I want to be able to make, raise or store my own on all I can.
I 've been visiting blogs and learning all I can from people who like me want to come more reliant on themselfs . I'm not a gloom and doom person God knows the time and place for my life to end and in Him I will put my trust, so while here on earth I will do the best i can with what He has intrusted me to handle. I do hope everyone has a wonderful day and if your reading this I thank you for your visit.

Morning storm, mushroom hunting

Winds are blowing and lighting is flashing, I'm about to head out for work and would like for it to stop, if I had any pull, lol  hubby and I got the poles in place to stake my blackberry vines, all 15 lived so I am now in the blackberry business. Fresh jelly and pies and a few dumplings are on the way. As for this year I now have 2 cherry trees( berries are very sweet) 15 blackberries, strawberry patch about a 8x10 and growing, 2 rhubarb plants, 2 persimmon trees, 1 pecan got nuts off it last year still small though, 3 black walnut, and 2 hickory nut trees, I feel blessed to say the least. My tomatoes are in the ground along with all my herbs in their hotbed. I thing this year will be a good plant year, around here everyone is hunting mushrooms, I went out with my brothers and we found around 200 or better, soaked them in salt water for 24hrs and fried them up oh so good. Does anyone else go mushroom hunting?

Busy morning

I am off today so had to start early on my yard chores before the rain. I planted all my herbs into the raised herb bed, and the tomatoes into their bed. I now have officially started my food pantry. I am learning how to grow and store Herbs this year along with drying and putting up my garden, I have canned for years but want to learn something new. my youngest daughter will be learning with me. I am so excited, so if anyone grows their own and stores them give me a holler. I'm getting ready to start new aprons for the girls. My oldest loves them and dishrags are always welcome in her home. I pray all of you have a wonderful day in Christ.                           Sherry

On the farm

This week, I put in 15 blackberry plants, planted a flowering almond and a pink dogwood in our new yard garden. It now has 3 raised beds and strawberry plot. The chicken coop will be moved on the end of it,can't wait to get started on it.
Tomorrow I will be getting the other chicks that I'm getting to fatten up for the freezer. We are raising as much as we can during the year to provide for us this winter, I hope to have our larders full and plenty stored.
I hope to learn a lot while I'm on here and hope to help others also.
