Close to years end...

2013 is going out with a winter flood. praise God it was a small one. The roads around us were closed but only for a short time. We will all be out by morning and the other end of the road should be clear also. I like being stuck in, pantry full and our little family not being able to go anywhere kind of nice..... Has everyone made their New Years pledges? I'm working on a few. Like most, paying off bills, but more things I would like to see happen around my home. A flower garden beside the house, lots of plants on the porch, and planting more shade trees to help cut down on using the air. I'm also working on a new blog and will be closing this one. I'm also taking down my facebook as well. I will let everyone know when I will have it open. I still have to move things over. Hope everyone has a good night.

Early thoughts of Christmas

Just thinking it's about time to get going with little things I need to do. This year all my gifts will be home made. I can't say much because family reads this blog also. lol but a few things going to others is this clothes pin bag. I won't say to who but I'm sure she will use it.

this idea came from Visit auxpetitsriens.canalblog.com    I love red work. I want this on an apron also. To cute.
If your doing something please share.

This would look so good on a garden apron........ I do love aprons.
Well done for now everyone have a wonderful day!

Winter setting in

I wouldn't be telling the truth if I didn't say I do like some parts of winter. The warmth of a nice fire. The snuggle under a blanket, while drinking my favorite tea,  and of course a nice snow day so I don't have to work, but then again my hubby does as he works for the highway....him,me...him,me  well lets just leave that there, lol.
As some of you know I work in retail/bakery which means I work all holidays and most weekends. It didn't use to be like that. Growing up you shopped on Saturday or after work during the week, because come holidays and Sundays, stores were closed so everyone could be with their family, but now most everyone wants stores open on the holidays so they can get that last item they forgot. Just sad end of rant. So again, snow day..............lol
Well not much else flipping through my head....boy kind of empty .. Oh well everyone have a wonderful day, and smile at the all workers as the holidays get closer..... firemen, police, nurses and everyone else....

Saturday on the farm

Today got up at 3:30, not a surprise I've done it for years, lol I hardly ever have an alarm go off. Good thing I'm a farmers wife.

The family will be coming over later for a fish fry. I was hoping to have the porch done but nope hit a snag...
I had wanted to paint on the swing , so I tried yesterday to put bird houses and flowers on the back of the swing only to find out that it blurs to much for me to do the details. So after a good cry, talking with my oldest and realizing this is not the end I decided to sew pillows. I might get that done but really doubt it because I need to paint the bench today to give it time to dry for this afternoon
To some it might seem funny to be painting and fixing in the fall, But I can not handle heat at all. I also love to decorate for fall which is my favorite time of year (unless those dumb ladybugs are everywhere).lol So I hope as time goes on I will get everything , my oldest daughter Misty would say, mom don't worry you always do.....................and my youngest Kaydy, she  will help if I need her. Love my kids!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

I got the swing and the frame painted now to paint on the bird houses...... I hope to start on that tonight, if all goes well. The family didn't think they would like the black but after they have seen it, they do!!! Now to the next step.......Hope to get the pics up soon.

On to other things. The garden has really came to an end......I didn't plant late crops this year my eyes have been giving me a little trouble. Macular Degeneration is no fun.....I guess that's why I want to do this swing. Funny of all things I have over come this is one that I can't control but then again it will not control me....If you have this I would love to hear from you. How your doing with day to day chores. Well everyone have a great day I'm off to do breakfast and then to work...

Porch

I love my porch, the swing and my little pew. It needs a face lift bad!!! It took awhile to pick my colors.  I decided to stay with my birdhouse theme. I'll use dark green, sunflower yellow, paprika red, sand brown and black.
Right now the swing is , well lets say dull. so it needs a good paint job..lol I'll be getting paint tomorrow......

Creamy Bacon Potato Soup

I made this for the first time last week, but it will now be the way I make it all the time. All the family loved it. There was none left!!!!!! So yes a keeper!!! My oldest daughter is rolling her eyes saying mom and her grease pot.....lol  Everyone have a wonderful day!!

Creamy Bacon Potato Soup

Ingredients

·         6 slices Thin Bacon, Cut Into 1-inch Pieces

·         1 whole Medium Onion, Diced

·         3 whole Carrots, Scrubbed Clean And Diced

·         3 stalks Celery, Diced

·         6 whole med Potatoes, Peeled And Diced (I used russets)

·         8 cups  Chicken Broth

·         3 Tablespoons All-purpose Flour

·         1 cup half and half (you could use milk)

·         1/2 teaspoon Salt, More To Taste

·         Black Pepper To Taste

·         1 cup Grated Cheese Of Your Choice

Put your bacon pieces into a soup pot over medium heat and cook bacon until crisp and you got some good grease going. Remove the bacon from the pot and set it aside. Pour off some of the grease, but do not clean the pot. (I leave the grease, that's just the way I cook, you can never have to much bacon grease, I can see my oldest daughters face as I type :) Ok this is not a diet soup people, its called Bacon Potato Soup!!

Return the pot to medium-high heat and add the onions, carrots, and celery. Stir and cook for 2 minutes or so, then add the diced potatoes. Cook for 5 minutes, add your salt, pepper.

Pour in the broth and bring it to a gentle boil. Cook for 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are starting to get tender. Whisk together the flour and the half and half, then pour into the soup and allow the soup to cook for another 5 minutes.

Remove about 6 cups or so of the soup and blend in a blender/food process until completely smooth.(i put it in a bowl and used a hand mixer, worked fine). If you don't want any potato pieces then use about 1/2 or 3/4 of you soup. Pour it back into the soup pot and stir to combine. I then put in most of my bacon pieces because we like it with the bacon flavor added, you can leave it out if you like. Let it heat back up as you taste for seasonings, adding more of what it needs.

Serve in bowls with grated cheese and crisp bacon pieces on top.(if you didn't put them all back in your pot like me :)

Wash on Monday,Iron on Tues........

I just never seem to fit in that mode anymore. For people who know me, they would say " I can see you doing that" but really with the way my life has been and working full time, that just can't happen. I always loved that saying and have put it to needle work many a time. But let me tell ya, Fridays are my day. This pretty fall air and breeze...clothes out on the line, bed clothes flapping in the wind, oh my that's my haven. I so much love the calmness of it all. Cooking steaks out on the grill tonight, and sitting on the swing under the trees, nothing better I don't think so....love my Fridays!!!!! What is your favorite day?

Rain!!!

I'm so glad we got rain today... the garden needed it and I just needed it to cool down. I'm drinking a cup of coffee before I head to work,. A coworkers hubby is in the hospital and I'm closing for her and working on some rearranging in the bakery. I had worked this morning and left early at 11 so I could come back by 6 and work on thru the night. I hope to get lots done..I changed my blog pic, it's a little large so I will downsize it later when I have more time.
The ladies were making a lot of noise when I came in, I went to check it out and couldn't find a thing until I looked up. Yup you got it a hawk... the rooster made a noise and the ladies all went to the house..he stood at the door,. He didn't go in he just stood there waiting...now that's the man!!! I was there so I knew the hawk wouldn't come down, but he  didn't he was ready to fight if he had too. I love barnevelder chicks!!!!!!!

Change of Seasons

Our youngest daughter turns 18 this week, yes I am sad....but so proud of how she has become such a warm loving lady. Her coming into adulthood on the 6th brings me coming into (senior) on the 5th. at 55. Now I wasn't to sad about that until I realized that AARP has found me also. Now let me tell ya someone sending me all these things that are to help me, makes me feel older than dirt....I just think that  they should hold off sending anything until I ask them!!!!!!! Like in my 80's or later . AARP just sounds old, now for all the flack I'm going to get for this I'm sorry, I'm sure I will love everything they can do for me, but please give me a minute would you, to adjust to my hubby saying (hey honey you won't forget this one its on the speed limit signs) He loves me so !! My daughter saying hey mom we can get it cheaper just say how old you are, yes she loves me too. So as the day gets closer I am sure it will come and go like a breeze but let me tell ya if my sisters were here I would be doing a Thelma and Louise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and for my little one turning 18 I hope she handles 55 better than me.........lol

Who is that!!!!!

Wow, going to the garden has become a walk in the forest! I'm just so sad! I do think this has taught me something about, me... I'm not as young as I use to be, 55 has it's draw backs, on me. LOL. I can't work a 40 hour week at the store and still have a full garden. Canning, dehydrating and freezing our food has always been a way of life to me, a life I loved. But my life is changing, sad but true all things must change. I've told hubby that's its time to cut back. So now finding that middle of the road that will make me happy is what I need to find!! So another page has turned and I'm ready to learn another side of me.... :)

Lace jars

I found these through another friend, they are so cute. I'm going to use them on my bedroom dresser. They could be used in the kitchen, or anywhere. You can see how to do them here.

Seed Ruler

This is such a good idea, it can be ordered from the site above, but I got a wooden ruler from the farm show,so I'm going to drill holes and use it. I can not wait for garden time. I've got all my seeds and will be starting them on the 20th. Then it will feel better in my soul. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Can't wait!!

Full color will be coming soon. When I was younger we had a black and white TV. and every time a show would come on  and it would say  "now in full Technicolor" I would yell "it's in color" until my loving brother told me in a kind word, not anything like "you dummy, lol" we have a black and white TV. Those were the days.. but anyway color will be coming soon so thought I would brighten the day with this.

Enjoy your Sunday!!!

albino possum

Some of you might have seen these before on your place but this is the first for us. The cows didn't know what to think, but the opossum wasn't afraid of them. He did move on back into the edge of the woods. We have seen him or her for about a week now. I hope he makes it.

Early morning post

While waiting to get up the rest the family thought I would post a short word or two. The wind is really strong today, it is making a whistle noise down the chimney, kind of sad, lost noise.... I hate strong winds, it puts down trees on our fence and that means a longer work day for hubby to clean up after he gets home from his day job. The cattle would love to roam the woods behind the fence, until they heard the tractor bringing in hay and they would come back, today, but now in spring when all is green they would think ( run forest run).
This is a short week for me, at work, pay cuts and all. I really don't mind because I have a lot to catch up on with the seed starting and garden planning. Hubby will have my hotbed ready by the weekend. So I'll be starting seed there year under window panes, can't wait. Well really that's about it, short and  sweet, hope everyone has a great Monday.

Cold frames

Well while many ladies want flowers ,candy or dinner for their anniversary I want a cold frame.... I plan on putting it right next to my house, right out my side door for fresh veggies as long as I can keep them coming.  I will use it to  start my plants also, Oh! by the way I want 3 of them .  One  6x3 to run the south side of my house, one 2x6 and the last one by the chicken house, and one 3x8 on the hill side by my raised beds. So glad hubby is the kind of man that would spend money on this a lot faster then dinner and a movie, (country boy). got to love him. Everyone have a great day and I will post pics as he makes them.

Frost dates Great tool !!

As I was planning my seed starting charts on the  calendar. I went to check out the time it took one of my maters to germinate on Johnny seeds site and ran across this tool. I popped in my frost day and it did the rest, it told me when to set it to seed and when to plant it out........ http://www.johnnyseeds.com/e-PDGSeedStart.aspx??source=HomeSeedCalc0212 . I printed mine out and it is now taped to my calendar and I am ready to plant.....after
My next task which is to check the moon phase for my plants and I then I will be ready to plant my seed..  http://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates/zipcode . I used both of these together and I think I have a great plan ready to use!!
How is everyone else doing with their planning?

Baking powder Buiscuits

My family loves homemade biscuits, this recipe is simple and tastes great. It also is cheaper to make than store bought which is why I do it, plus I know and can spell everything in it. lol

 Baking Powder Biscuits

2 cups Flour, All-purpose – sifted
1 tablespoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Salt
1/4 cup Shortening
3/4 cup Milk

•Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal or crumbs.
•dig out a hole in the middle of the flour-shortening mixture and stir in enough milk to make
a soft dough  You don't want to over mix, just enough to pull from the sides of the bowl and it starts chasing your fork
•Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently  .
•Roll 3/4" thick.  Cut with a 2 1/2" cutter; place close together on a baking sheet for soft sides
1" apart for crusty sides on ungreased baking sheet. You can use parchment paper. Bake in very hot oven (450°) for 10-12 minutes.

They stand up good with gravy, which my hubby has to have along with it......

Sunday, Rainy day

Well it has been raining now for about 13 hours, after 16 in. of snow this can not be good. I live by the White River and even though it can't get my house it can flood me in. Now mind you I don't really mind all that much because my pantry is full, and the freezer is stocked. Work on the other hand, well for 23 yrs they have been ok with it because it is a natural disaster, but after the way things are who knows. Living on a farm everyone knows you can't go off and leave it, fences get under water and cattle do swim. They like to get caught on the other side of the hill where they can't get food and we have to boat over to get them back across. It's safer and better just to watch and keep them here on this side. Another problem is there is now access to the back of our sheds and barn because of the water, robbery of gas and tractor parts, along with anything else they can get is always a threat. So the rain can stop any time.

The chickens have been in the coop for most of the last few weeks, with the snow they didn't go out. The rain and warmer weather has them out? I guess rain is better then snow. If you haven't been up with my blog. I raise barnevelders, the breed is a little different then what I have raised in the past. I have learned that when 1 molts they all molt. They all lay in the same cycle, so when 1 stops you might as well get ready they all will. The roosters are very protective but not with the family, but will take charge if something comes around. Very friendly once they know you and will follow you around. I will keep you up dated as the year goes on as far as eggs go, they got old enough to lay just before it got cold so I don't have a good idea yet.
Now we have sleet...............thats not good. Think tea is in order. Have a great night.
